Kevin is SOLABS' Head of Engineering, and one of the cornerstones of SOLABS. I hope you have as much pleasure in learning a bit more about him as I had during the interview.
The following interview was conducted on September 14th, 2022.
Etienne: How long have you been a member of the SOLABS team?
Kevin: I've been here 11 years and 3 months. I think I'm the most recent employee to have crossed the 10+ years threshold at SOLABS.
At the time, SOLABS needed an integrator that could bring more structure to the support process. I had just the profile they were looking for.
Etienne: What motivated you to join SOLABS at the time?
Kevin: I had spent the last couple of years working for a large company, and I was looking for a place where I would have more room to grow and create my own path. I was also looking for an industry where my work would directly help people. SOLABS' focus in the Life Sciences industry offered a great fit for me!
Etienne: What's your favorite part of being a member of the SOLABS team?
Kevin: I love the company as a whole! I have a soft spot for the engineering team. Many members of that team have been working with me for over 10 years. We have created deep bonds and together overcome obstacles that can help define one's career. Working with this team is worth its weight in gold for me.
Etienne: What do you love most about the SaaS and Life Sciences industries?
Kevin: The thing I enjoy the most is having the feeling that I make a difference in people's everyday life. I spent a part of my life working in the medical industry - hospitals, etc. It was not the right fit for me, but the notion of making an impact on people's health is still very important one to me. Working in the Life Sciences industry, I feel that what I do every day has the impact I am looking to make, while still applying my strengths.
Etienne: How do you define success?
Kevin: This is a topic I could talk about for hours! For me, success is a process that can be measured with multiple KPIs. At the end of the day though, I rely on 5 rules that that have been key to me over the last few years:
1. I focus only on the things that I have total control over with my effort and attitude
2. I love what I do and I attack each day with joy and enthusiasm
3. I dream big and I ignore the naysayers
4. I am relentless and I will NEVER give up on my dreams
5. I choose faith over fear
Etienne: What's a fun fact about you that not many people know?
Kevin: People see me as a nerd because of how much of my job involves sitting behind a screen, but I have a highly adventurous side! I've done several multiple-day quad rides, even busting the motor of one on a mountain once! I love hunting, camping, bungee, skydiving, and more!
Etienne: What is your favorite hobby?
Kevin: Precision shooting! Some people are scared when I mention it, but precision shooting involves firing at a target from a very long distance. It requires precise body movement as well as precise calculations (wind, distance, gravity), and I like this duality. On average, I practice at around the 400m mark, but I'd love to get the opportunity to practice longer shots in the near future!
Etienne: What is the next place on your travel bucket list?
Kevin: It's a battle between Italy and South Korea! Visiting Italy is a long-standing childhood dream. On the other hand, I would visit Korea for its culture. I am a big fan of Korean series, and would love to take a dip in their society for a period of time.
Etienne: If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kevin: That's a tough one! I would pick lasagna, but only if it's homemade, with tons of different meats and cheeses! The store or restaurant lasagnas don't cut it for me!
Etienne: What's one item you can't live without?
Kevin: I'll cheat and say electricity! There are a few electronic devices that I would not be able to live without, including my e-reader.
