Environment
- Product: SOLABS QM10
- Versions: All versions
- File Type Affected: Portable Document Format (PDF)
Issue/Symptoms
When a user attempts to open a PDF document from within SOLABS QM10, the document viewer page briefly flashes on screen and then closes or reloads without displaying the file content. No document preview is rendered, and no descriptive error message is presented to the user.
Common symptoms include:
- Clicking the document link or preview icon causes a brief flash of the viewer window.
- The PDF does not render or open in the browser or embedded viewer.
- The behavior is consistent and repeatable for the same document.
- Other, unprotected documents open normally, isolating the issue to a specific file.
Cause
The PDF document is password protected (encrypted with an "Open Password" or restricted by a security policy). SOLABS QM10's embedded document viewer does not support rendering encrypted or password-protected PDF files. When such a file is opened, the viewer fails to load the content, which causes the flashing behavior described above.
Resolution
- Confirm the document is password protected. Open the file locally using a standard PDF reader (for example, Adobe Acrobat Reader). If the reader prompts for a password before displaying the content, or if the file properties indicate security restrictions, this confirms the cause. Expected outcome: The password protection is confirmed as the source of the issue.
- Obtain the document in an editable, unprotected file format, if available. Locate the original source file (for example, a Microsoft Word or Excel version) rather than the exported PDF. Using the unprotected source avoids the need to modify the PDF's security settings directly. Expected outcome: An editable copy of the document, free of password protection, is available for use.
- Remove the password protection via the application's security settings. Navigate to the document's Properties, then select the Security tab. Set the Security Method to No Security, and save the file. Expected outcome: The PDF no longer requires a password to open.
- Upload or re-attach the unprotected PDF to SOLABS QM10. Replace the original password-protected file with the updated, unprotected version. Expected outcome: The document opens normally in the SOLABS QM10 viewer without flashing or failing to load.
Additional Information
- Preventive Measure: Do not apply password protection or open-password encryption to PDF files before uploading them to SOLABS QM10. The embedded viewer requires unencrypted files to render content correctly.
- Known Limitation: SOLABS QM10 does not currently support viewing password-protected or encrypted PDF documents within its embedded viewer.
